National Center for Biblical Parenting – The Christian Parenting Handbook
I think we’ve all said it… “Why don’t these kids come with a manual?” Usually it’s at a point of exasperation or after having done something the absolute worst way possible. Kids don’t come with a manual. You’re pretty much going to mimic the same parenting techniques your parents used (good or bad) and you may add a little to the mix if you were blessed enough to read a parenting book here or there. For the most part though, it seems like it’s trial and error. In most cases, a lot of error. That’s really frustrating. Parenting is frustrating. But, there’s a resource out there to help lead you in Bible based parenting.

What is a heart based approach?
I’ve attended parenting classes and picked at a few books over the years, but I’ve never found something as soothing to read as The Christian Parenting Handbook. As a mom, I have mommy guilt. Don’t we all? I lie in bed at night thinking over my choices for the day and how wrong most of them were. Not exactly a bedtime lullaby. The Christian Parenting Handbook is affirming and supportive. It doesn’t tell you how wrong you’ve been. It shows you the right way to parent.

Affirm Godly behavior
When I heard about the opportunity to review this book I jumped on it because I know I need tips. Lots of tips. We have 3 small children and one heading for the teenage years. There’s a lot of fussing and fighting and lying and not sharing going on at my house 24-7. Yes, even in their sleep they are stealing covers from each other. Its enough to wear a mom out.

Focus on the heart
The problem has been that I can’t seem to find out exactly what to do to make things better, or to change their behavior. I’m doing time outs, discipline, sanctioning of tv/toy time, and more, but the same behaviors keep showing up the next day. What am I doing wrong?

It’s time for a new plan
That’s what The Christian Parenting Handbook helped me to see. I AM doing it wrong. I’ve been addressing the behavior of my kids instead of their hearts. Their actions are motivated by their hearts and until I look deeper into the heart issues I’m never going to train them up in the way they should go. But here’s the kicker. While it shows me what to do (and I see what I’ve been doing isn’t always right), I don’t feel judged or looked down on as a bad parent. I’m addressed as a parent who cares, loves, and wants to know how to make the right choices.

Try a different approach
My favorite part of this book was the way it was written. Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller. RN, BSN speak in down to earth English. There’s no clinical language or confusing references to psychological terminology. It’s just real people with real experience writing to real parents. Parents who want to do the right thing and accomplish the right goal (training up our children in the ways of the Lord), but don’t know how.

Pray for your children
Let’s be honest though. Who is going to read this one book and fix their entire household? Probably no one. Parenting is a journey. There are stages or “shifts” in parenting as our children grow older. We need support. We need leadership and guidance. Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller. RN, BSN know that and they’ve developed online courses as well as other parenting resources to help us through the entire journey.
